The Gallery – Hilton Waikoloa is pleased to present a wood working demonstration outside The Gallery – Hilton Waikoloa Village, located in the Lagoon Tower, on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 20 & 21 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by Master Craftsman Harold Rhodes.

The relationship between stone, wood and man is a compelling foundation for Rhodes’ work. An elegant simplicity in design has resulted in walking sticks. Not only uniquely beautiful with raw materials such as Ohia, Mango and Koa, but functional becoming an intimate expression of his craft.

The two-day demo will allow Rhodes to transform rough wood into a finished functional form, giving time to demonstrate various aspects of other techniques such as dovetails for a small box, mortise and tenon joints for a small table or perhaps case, and the historical methods of achieving a smooth surface prior to applying finish.

“What excites me so much about the freedom allowed by hand tools is that I don't need a plan; the widths of my chisels determine the size of my tenons. When I look at work that has withstood the test of time, I am first struck by the fact that each piece, each table or set of chairs, is slightly different. The work of these craftsmen convey so much about themselves, but more importantly about the environment or home for which the piece was created. I think this unique feature is the true gift of old tools and methods. Combine this freedom with patience and peace and quiet, and I feel that I can build an ordinary object that is truly unique,” stated Rhodes.

Rhodes will be showcasing his fantastic rocking chairs, table, walking/ hiking sticks, right and left handed utensils, spoons, spatulas, tongs and small cases combining Ohia with the cut blue rock found here on Hawaii’s Big Island.

“We only use Ohia for these pieces as the wood hardens extremely well with time, and it does not have that acidic after taste that Koa does,” Rhodes explained.

“Born in Oklahoma and raised in the shadow of the Cascade Mountains, the path less traveled has become a way of life. These years have forged an unquestionable respect for nature and with time this has become a reverence for the world, in which we are a partner. The bond between craftsman and nature is often judged by function or beauty…… and on rare occasion, both,” Rhodes continued.

The Gallery - Hilton Waikoloa Village displays original work from Big Island artists and is open Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. The Gallery is located in Hilton Waikoloa Village's Lagoon Tower.
